Surah 11. Hud, Ayah 77
| وَلَمَّا جَاءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا سِيءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَقَالَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٌ |
| Transliteration | : | wa- lammaa jaa'at rusul -naa lot.(an) se'a bi- -him wa- d.aaqa bi- -him dharc(an) wa- qaala haadhaa yawm cas.eb |
| Pickthall | : | And when Our messengers came unto Lot, he was distressed and knew not how to protect them. He said: This is a distressful day. |
| Asad | : | AND WHEN Our messengers came unto Lot, he was sorely grieved on their account, seeing that it was beyond his power to shield them;107 and he exclaimed: "This is a woeful day!" |
| Malik | : | When Our messengers, in the form of beautiful young men, came to Lut, he became upset about them, for he felt helpless to offer them protection against his nation's many violent homosexual men. He said: "This is a critical day." |
| Yusuf Ali | : | When Our Messengers came to Lut he was grieved on their account and felt himself powerless (to protect) them. He said: "This is a distressful day." 1574 |
Note - 107Lit., "he was straitened as regards the reach of his arm
in their behalf" - an idiomatic phrase often used in
classical Arabic, denoting here Lot's utter inability to
afford his guests protection from the people of Sodom,
whose homosexual propensities have ever since been
commemorated in the term "sodomy". Since Lot thought that
the strangers were no more than handsome young men, he
felt certain that they would be sexually assaulted by his
sinful countrymen.

Note - 1574The story of Lot, as referred to in vii. 80-84, laid
emphasis on the rejection of Lot's mission by men who
practised unnatural abominations. See n. 1049 to vii. 80.
Here the emphasis is laid on Allah's dealings with men-in
mercy for true spiritual service and in righteous wrath
and punishment for those who defy the laws of nature
established by Him;-also on men's dealings with each
other and the contrast between the righteous and the
wicked who respect no laws human or divine.
