Surah 2. Al-Baqara, Ayah 225



لَا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ اللَّهُ بِاللَّغْوِ فِي أَيْمَانِكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ يُؤَاخِذُكُمْ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ


Transliteration : laa yu'aakhidh -kum 'allaah bi- al- laghw fe aymaan -kum wa- laakin yu'aakhidh -kum bi- maa kasabat qulob -kum wa- 'allaah ghafor h.alem
Pickthall : Allah will not take you to task for that which is unintentional in your oaths. But He will take you to task for that which your hearts have garnered. Allah is Forgiving, Clement.
Asad : God will not take you to task for oaths which you may have uttered without thought, but will take you to task [only] for what your hearts have conceived [in earnest]: for God is muchforgiving, forbearing.
Malik : Allah will not hold you accountable for what is inadvertent in your oaths, but He will hold you accountable for what you intended in your hearts; Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.
Yusuf Ali : Allah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness in your oaths but for the intention in your hearts; and He is Oft-Forgiving Most Forbearing. 252

Yusuf Ali 252 It has been held that thoughtless oaths, if there is no intention behind them, can be expiated by an act of charity.
