Surah 4. An-Nisaa, Ayah 15
| وَاللَّاتِي يَأْتِينَ الْفَاحِشَةَ مِنْ نِسَائِكُمْ فَاسْتَشْهِدُوا عَلَيْهِنَّ أَرْبَعَةً مِنْكُمْ ۖ فَإِنْ شَهِدُوا فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ فِي الْبُيُوتِ حَتَّىٰ يَتَوَفَّاهُنَّ الْمَوْتُ أَوْ يَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ لَهُنَّ سَبِيلًا |
| Transliteration | : | wa- 'allaate ya'tena al- faah.ishah min nisaa' -kum fa- istashhido calay -hinna arbacah min -kum fa- 'in shahido fa- amsiko -hunna fe al- buyot h.attaa yatawaffaa -hunna al- mawt 'aw yajcal 'allaah la- -hunna sabel(an) |
| Pickthall | : | As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation). |
| Asad | : | AND AS FOR those of your women who become guilty of immoral conduct, call upon four from among you who have witnessed their guilt; and if these bear witness thereto, confine the guilty women12 to their houses until death takes them away or God opens for them a way [through repentance]. |
| Malik | : | If any of your women are guilty of fornication, ask for four reliable witnesses from among yourselves against them; and if they testify and their guilt is proved, confine them to their houses until they die or Allah opens some other way out for them. |

required, i.e., the evidence of four instead of the usual
two witnesses. It is the same for adultery (see xxiv.
4.).

received. Those who take the crime to be adultery or
fornication construe this definite order ("some other
way") to mean some definite pronouncement by the Prophet
under inspiration; this was the punishment of flogging
under xxiv. 2, for fornication, and stoning to death
under the Prophet's directives for adultery.
