Surah 63. Al-Munafiqun, Ayah 8
| يَقُولُونَ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ ۚ وَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ وَلِرَسُولِهِ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلَٰكِنَّ الْمُنَافِقِينَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ |
| Transliteration | : | yaqolon la- 'in rajacnaa 'ilaa al- madenah la- yukhrijanna al- acazz min -haa al- adhall wa- li- 'allaah al- cizzah wa- li- rasol -hi wa- li- al- mu'minen wa- laakin al- munaafiqen laa yaclamon |
| Pickthall | : | They say: Surely, if we return to Al Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and the believers; but the hypocrites know not. |
| Asad | : | [And] they say, "Indeed, when we return to the City,10 [we,] the ones most worthy of honour, will surely drive out therefrom those most contemptible ones!" However, all honour belongs to God, and [thus] to His Apostle and those who believe [in God]: but of this the hypocrites are not aware.11 |
| Malik | : | They say: "When we return to Madinah, the honorable ones will soon drive out the mean ones." But the honor belongs to Allah, to His Rasool and to the believers; but the hypocrites do not know. |
| Yusuf Ali | : | They say "If we return to Madinah surely the more honorable (element) will expel there from the meaner." But honor belongs to Allah and His Apostle and to the Believers; but the Hypocrites know not. 5475 |
Note - 10I.e., Medina, the "City of the Prophet" (Madinat
an-Nabi), as the town previously called Yathrib began to
be known after the hijrah. Since - as it is established
through several ahadith - the subsequent saying was
uttered by 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy during the campaign
against the tribe of Banu Mustaliq in 5 H., it is obvious
that verses {7} and {8} were revealed at the same date or
a little later.

Note - 11It is in these two Qur'anic statements - "unto God belong
the treasures...", etc., and "all honour belongs to
God...", etc. - that the real, lasting purport of the
above historical allusions is to be found.

Note - 5475Words of this import were spoken by 'Abdullah ibn Ubai,
the leader of the Madinah Hypocrites, to or about the
Exiles, in the course of the expedition against the Banu
Mustaliq in the fourth or fifth year of the Hijra. He had
hopes of leadership which were disappointed by the coming
to Madinah of a man far greater than he. So he arrogated
to himself and his clique the title of "the more
honourable (element)" and slightingly spoke of the
Emigrants as the "meaner" element that had intruded from
outside.
