Surah 7. Al-A'raf, Ayah 144



قَالَ يَا مُوسَىٰ إِنِّي اصْطَفَيْتُكَ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِرِسَالَاتِي وَبِكَلَامِي فَخُذْ مَا آتَيْتُكَ وَكُنْ مِنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ


Transliteration : qaala yaa mosaa 'inni -y is.t.afaytu -ka calaa an- naas bi- risaalaat -e wa- bi- kalaam -e fa- khudh maa 'aataytu -ka wa- kun min ask- shaakiren
Pickthall : He said : O Moses ! I have preferred thee above mankind by My messages and by My speaking (unto thee). So hold that which I have given thee, and be among the thankful.
Asad : Said [God]: "O Moses! Behold, I have raised thee above all people by virtue of the messages which I have entrusted to thee,107 and by virtue of My speaking [unto thee]: hold fast, therefore, unto what I have vouchsafed thee, and be among the grateful!"
Malik : Allah said: "O Musa! I have chosen you from among mankind to deliver My message and to have conversation with Me: so take what I give you and be thankful."
Yusuf Ali : (Allah) said: "O Moses! I have chosen thee Above (other) men By the mission I (have Given thee) and the words I (have spoken to thee): Take then the (revelation) Which I give thee And be of those Who give thanks." 1105 1106

Yusuf Ali 1105 "Above (other) men": i.e. among his contemporaries. He had a high mission, and he had the honour of speaking to Allah.

Yusuf Ali 1106 Allah's revelation is for the benefit of His creatures, who should receive it with reverence and gratitude. While Moses was having these great spiritual experiences on the Mount, his people below were ungrateful enough to forget Allah and make a golden calf for worship (vii. 147).
